Nero d'Avola 2022

Nero d'Avola 2022

I fell in love with the Nero d'Avola grape during my trips to Italy as a young winemaker.

The black grape from Avola is native to Sicily, the southern island at the tip of the Italian peninsula. I visited the vineyards of Avola, and was struck by their many similarities to our home in McLaren Vale.

Now, decades later, we make a tiny batch of Nero d'Avola in the Vale, and the results are stunning.

This is a spicy, savoury red which bursts with black plum and cherry fruit flavours.

This wine is the ultimate match for Mediterranean cooking. I love serving it alfresco with dishes like Veal Scallopine with Herb and Tomato.

It’s as they say it is, nice and rich and full of berry. Good drinking now but should improve with some age. I would definitely buy again.

The second vintage of this wine is a ripper. The perfect easy drinking red. McLaren Vale is proving to be ideal for this variety. Sicily, beware!

Of course it's 5-star! Right up there with all the other wonderful Primo products that we know and love, and not too expensive to quaff enjoyably without the guilt over what you paid!

This is one of my favourite grape varieties. Love the berry notes, the deep colour and the smooth effect on the palate. We have a few bottles that we will leave to age. On my watch list for next vintage

I have been a fan of Primo Estate Nero d'Avola since it was first produced. I am now enjoying the 2021 vintage.

The only Nero I have tasted that comes close to this was actually in Sicily

This 2nd edition of this wine is outstanding. Since being introduced to this grape here I am a convert. Truly delicious.

As a 50+ year drinker of Barossa and McClaren shirazes, and with a vested interest in some wine grapes I believe this cepage might just knock a lot of Aussie shiraz buyers off their socks!
