Verdicchio Classico Superiore 2022
All great wines come with a story - and our new Italian-made Verdicchio is no exception.
This was my first winemaking assignment overseas: a Verdicchio from my grandfather Primo’s homeland of Le Marche, central Italy.
To make it, I worked at Cantina Santa Barbara alongside the legendary winemaker Stefano Antonucci. Stefano is renowned for transforming Verdicchio from a sharp, austere white that once needed years to soften into one of Italy’s most generous and elegant wines.
Our vision was something new for the Primo range - a bright, layered white with a gentle touch of oak. A wine equally at home with seafood, pasta or roast chicken.
To achieve this, we sourced fruit from the Classico zone, 250 metres above sea level near the coastal town of Santa Barbara - where rolling hills meet the Adriatic. The Superiore classification represents the highest winemaking standard, with a touch of oak and extra time in bottle to develop texture and depth.
The result is a vibrant, savoury wine with aromas of white peach, lemon curd and toasted almond, finishing long, mineral and refreshing.
